去年十一月剛到英國，發現英國人胸前有個小襟章，鮮紅色相當搶眼。不清楚那象徵什麼，於是追根究柢，發現是一個歷史故事，一段罌粟花的故事。
一九一五年五月二日，法蘭德斯(Flanders)一片紅海。盛開的罌粟花，還有鮮血。John McCrae 中校看著同袍 Alexis Helmer 中尉戰死，這位加拿大的軍醫無能為力。翌日，他寫下了《在法蘭德斯戰場》(In Flanders Fields)，一首英文詩，一首在第一次世界大戰其間廣傳的詩作。
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
詩中記下了在第一次世界大戰最慘烈的戰場法蘭德斯開滿了罌粟花，花的紅色，正代表了戰壕中的鮮血。戰後，美國軍團(American Legion)以罌粟花來紀念第一次世界大戰中犧牲的美國軍人，之後，各個歐美及英聯邦國家亦跟隨這個習俗。
一九一九年十一月七日，英王喬治五世創立「停戰日」(Armistice Day)紀念第一次世界大戰於一九一八年十一月十一日上午十一時結束，整個大英國協同時紀念。自始，訂立每年的十一月十一日，為紀念第一次世界大戰、第二次世界大戰和其他戰爭中，犧牲的軍民紀念日，紀念活動會選擇最近十一月十一日的星期日舉行，定名為「國殤紀念日」(Remembrance Day) 。
今年，在衣領扣上一個小襟章，為人類無情的殺戮默哀。
